Digital Education: a Friend or a Foe of the Younger Generation?

The advances in digital communications are truly impressive. Even a dozen years ago, it was impossible to imagine that you can access the Internet from a small digital device that fits in the palm of your hand or communicate with distant relatives through a video call.

The pandemic, having paralyzed the possibilities of live human communication, at the same time made its own adjustments to the development of Internet cooperations. Entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and ordinary people began to look for alternative ways of interaction and transferring information that would not pose a threat to life.

The educational system, familiar to society, has also undergone tremendous changes. Over the course of several months, educational processes have switched to a distance format. And online education has shown quite positive results. How convenient is the new digital schooling and is such a sudden reform suitable for everyone? Let's learn from this article.

Generation Z: Paying Close Attention

Research in the field of sociology and psychology makes it possible to analyze the characteristics of the development and behavior of different age groups from the “theory of generations” point of view. This theory states that children and adolescents of different ages have common behaviors inherent in their age group. Such features are formed under the influence of digital devices and the surrounding reality.

The term “generation Z” refers to children who were born at the turn of the first and second decades of this century. Another definition for the younger generation is “digitalnatives”, which means “a person who depends on the network”.

Characteristics of the digital generation representatives:

1. the ability to perceive a rapidly shifting environment, changing images (the so-called “clip thinking”);

2. difficulty in concentrating their attention, which is the main negative feature.

Digital children are fussy and difficult for keeping themselves busy for long periods (for example, with reading a book or monotonous, repetitive work). Gadgets leave their mark on the behavior of young people. They quickly switch from one picture to another on the Internet, answer friends in instant messengers at lightning speed, but the information is not stored in their memory for long. They immediately forget what they did recently.

Educators find it problematic to bond with Generation Z.

How to Get the Most out of Your Digital Devices?

Modern schools have a fairly extensive technical base used in the educational process:

- Personal computers in classrooms;

- Projectors;

- Interactive panels;

-Printers that create three-dimensional models;

- Virtual classes, which recreate a model of real situations for training as close as possible to real conditions.

Digital devices make the learning process much easier for both students and teachers. Some tutorials are so fun that learning becomes easy and fascinating. However, live communication between a student and a teacher cannot be completely replaced by the digital world. Only the teacher's voice, visual contact, live examples, and incidental questions, combined with the use of digital technologies, will allow us to form a standard of the educational process.

Teachers should explain to children how to use the power of gadgets for gaining new knowledge, quickly information searching and making life easier.

Has the Digital Future Come and Can it be Abandoned in the Education System?

Some conservatives would not mind bringing back the old educational system, which doesn’t have a deal with digital technologies. But there is no turning back.

Digital children are growing up and don’t want to give up the benefits of using gadgets:

1. Opportunities to find the necessary material through the World Wide Web, without leaving their home, at any convenient time.

2. Variety of training programs for every taste and level of knowledge.

3.Opportunities to develop their independence, to show purposefulness and willpower in solving complex problems.

4. Free communication in messengers, which, by the way, also has its own rules of conduct.

It can be concluded that the digital environment has become natural for modern people and can significantly improve and facilitate the life of society if it is used correctly.

Digital devices are meant to be assistants for students and teachers. The main thing is to explain to the child that a gadget is primarily a source of useful information and not means of entertainment. It is important to instill in children the right culture for using digital devices. This will help give a powerful impetus to the self-realization of the young generation and the disclosure of their potential.
